Here is another proverb of horses.
馬(うま)の耳(みみ)に念仏(ねんぶつ) literally means "Buddhist prayer for horses' ears." If you make a horse listens to Buddhist prayer, he wouldn't understand.

There are similar proverbs in English.
In one ear and out the other.
Speaking to the deaf.
To preach to the wind.
